Applying for a membership with CPDW INC

CPDW Inc represents professional dog handlers committed to public safety, animal welfare, and responsible practice.

Applicants must read and agree to the Constitution, Code of Conduct, and Code of Ethics before applying.

Submission of an application begins a review process and does not guarantee acceptance.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD/CEU) Requirements

CPDW Inc operates a structured professional development pathway to ensure members maintain safe, competent, and welfare-focused handling practices in public environments.


All members are required to complete annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD/CEU) relevant to canine behaviour, handling skills, public safety, and legal responsibilities.


Junior (Foundation Handler)

Minimum 40 hours per year

Focus: mentored learning, supervised handling, and foundational skill development.


Intermediate (Independent Handler)

Minimum 30 hours per year

Focus: competency consolidation, independent group management, and applied behavioural understanding.


Advanced (Professional Handler)

Minimum 20 hours per year

Focus: maintaining professional competency, risk management, and continuing education.

Junior and Intermediate members operate within a structured development pathway. Increased CPD/CEU requirements reflect supervised learning, guided experience, and professional oversight while progressing toward independent competency.

Acceptable CPD/CEUS Activities/ Study

CPD/ CEUS may include, but is not limited to:


• supervised group handling or shadowing an Advanced member

• canine body language and behaviour education

• learning theory and training application

• risk assessment and incident reporting

• canine first aid and emergency response

• public interaction and control skills

• legislation and local bylaw education

• workshops, seminars, courses, or practical training

Record Keeping & Accountability

Members must maintain personal CPD/ CEU records.

CPDW Inc may request CPD/CEU evidence for auditing and professional accountability purposes.

Failure to maintain CPD/CEU requirements may affect membership standing in accordance with the Constitution and Code of Conduct.

Christchurch Professional Dog Walkers Inc (CPDW Inc) is a voluntary professional association for people involved or interested in dog walking and canine handling.


Membership is open to professionals, trainees, and supporters of safe and responsible dog handling practices.


Joining CPDW Inc does not grant permission to exceed council dog limits and does not replace council requirements or exemptions. The society is not a licensing body or regulator.



Our purpose is to promote:

• safe dog handling in public spaces

• education and professional development

• animal welfare standards

• consistent industry practices



Members may access resources, guidance material, and professional development opportunities, and may choose to participate in competency programmes to support their own council exemption applications.

Membership is voluntary and intended to support best practice within the community.
